What is the difference between a stereo microscope and a compound microscope?

A stereo microscope provides a three-dimensional view of a sample at lower magnifications, typically up to 50x, making it ideal for dissection, assembly, and inspection. A compound microscope offers higher magnifications but a flat, two-dimensional image, suited for observing thin, transparent specimens like cells.

What magnification range can I expect from a stereo microscope?

Most standard stereo microscopes offer total magnifications between 5x and 50x, often via a zoom system. Advanced models with interchangeable objectives and eyepieces can reach up to 200x, but with reduced depth of field and working distance.

Which illumination types are commonly used with stereo microscopes?
